Tramadol for Relief of Cancer Pain

Cancer (Ca) affects millions of people worldwide every year. In the United States alone, there are 1.2 million new cases diagnosed annually. From this population, about 564,000 will die from the disease. If you breakdown this number to see how many victims die each day, you get a figure well within 1,500 people. This means that with every 4 people who die in the US, one of them dies because of cancer. According to statistics still, this disease is the second leading cause of death in the US, following death by heart diseases. It is also worth noting that this disease kills the most number of children and teens in industrialized countries all over the world.

cancer painThere are all kinds of malignancies and majority of these have a way of tormenting their victims. Others are so painful that no safe amount of narcotics can help ease the torture. Cancer is a very frightening disease and survivors deserve more than a pat in the back for winning over the battle. These enduring people will tell the painful ordeal they had to go through just to beat it. To minimize the agony brought by this hellish disease, analgesics are prescribed by physicians. For moderate to severe pain, tramadol hydrochloride is one of the drugs of choice. This works by binding with the mu-opioid receptors, responsible for analgesia, like those of the controlled narcotics. However, unlike its cousins, this synthetic analgesic has a more selective effect on these receptors and its affinity is significantly lower.

It also works by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin by the cells, thereby increasing their availability in the blood. This causes part of the analgesic effects of the drug. This also explains why this analgesic’s effects are not fully inhibited by naloxone, a well-known anti-narcotic drug and antidote. In addition, this somewhat explains its unlikelihood of abuse and why no concrete evidences of abuse are found.By working in two ways, this drug greatly reduces pain from Cancer with less worry of abuse in a patient’s part. Dependence and tolerance may develop but that is to be expected for long-term users due to a chronic disease. Patients are strictly instructed to take the medicine as prescribed. They are in no way allowed to take more if the agony does not subside. Rather than doubling or tripling the dose, patients are to go to their physicians to ask for professional help.

Overdosing from this drug can be fatal, especially for people with weakened bodies due to Cancer. Seizures, hallucinations, palpitations, rapid heart rate, agitation, loss of coordination, syncope, coma, and even death may result. It is then imperative to take this drug responsibly and never with alcohol. Keep it where others can’t get access to and never share with other people, especially those who have been or are addicted to any controlled substance. Tramadol hydrochloride is a powerful analgesic and works greatly for most forms of Cancer. It produces less chances of addiction so physicians need not monitor too closely the intake of the drug. However, for terminal stages, narcotics are normally the drugs of choice.
