Can Children Use Tramadol?

Every parent wants to make her kids healthy, fit and strong. A parent must give their kid nutritious foods and teach him hygienic habits in order for him to stay healthy. But when he is experiencing pain, the parent would automatically and immediately give medications to soothe the pain even if it means checking through their medicine cabinets. The question is if the Tramadol in your shelf can lessen your kid’s pain or worsen it.Tramadol is a highly known analgesic. It is used even during the 1970s and is one of the common names that you can think of when talking about pain management. This drug can relive pain disorders quickly and effectively like migraines, chronic pains and surgery pains.

Taking Tramadol is also safer than other drugs with different opioid compounds because it has less addictive effects in the brain. It also stops the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine that trigger mood swings and depression, effects similar to the antidepressant venlafaxine. That means that you will have lesser risk of having prescription drug addiction even if you are taking it regularly.tramadol and children

But even though Tramadol is beneficial to the body, you must also take note of the possible side effects in the body. These side effects include vomiting and nausea, and rare instances of dizziness, having rashes and hives, seizures, difficulty breathing and swallowing, swelling and sores. You just have to make sure that you are not allergic to its ingredients and you will be fine. But children taking Tramadol is not heavily advised, in fact it is too dangerous. Children younger than 16 years of age can experience greater health complications than adults even if you just give them a small amount, or what you might think is the regular dosage for children. Pregnant women must also avoid taking this drug or it might cause birth complications or even death.

However, there are studies conducted to see if children taking Tramadol after surgery can give them complications. A study conducted in Finland which was later published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia used children aged 1 to 3 as tests. These children are given 1ñ2 mg kgñ1 3 - 4 times a day after their operation. Results have shown that Tramadol is much effective than other opioid compounds in reducing post-operational pain.Another separate study conducted in the Shiraz University of Medical Studies in Iran used Tramadol in children aged 2-7 years old after their operation. The researchers found out that Tranadol is a more effective and better analgesic compared to other analgesics. But researchers also noticed these children having nausea and vomiting in relation to the drug’s side effects. Unless scientists have proven that Tramadol is safe for kids, never use it to your kid. Never try to experiment with it even once or your kid might have worse complications.

Keep this drug away from your kid’s eyes by storing it on top of a high shelf or medicine cabinet. If your kid is still having unusual pains, better ask your doctor for the right medication.
