The pain can be due to several factors as simple as staying in one position for too long, strain in the neck, or whiplash. It can also be due to more serious causes such as from a herniated disc, pinched nerve, degenerative disc diseases, and other peripheral or central nervous system problems.

The cervical vertebrae are composed of 7 bones. Break any of these and you’ll have very high chances of death. Within these bones are the spinal cord, canal, nerves, and discs. These are what make the neck along with the muscles, blood vessels, lymph nodes, esophagus, larynx, trachea, thyroid gland, and parathyroid gland.

Pain in the neck is commonly described as a dull ache that can be worsened by movement. In some cases, patients also report numbness, tingling, fullness, tenderness, pulsations, difficulty swallowing, swelling, sharp stabbing pain, even dizziness and lightheadedness. Neck pain can be just what it is or it can be a sign of a more serious condition. To be sure of its origin, a proper diagnosis is required.

Caution must also be exercised when doing activities that require alertness and concentration while on the drug.
